“You’re doing great.”
John never expected to be a father. For years, he told himself the job was too dangerous, his life too full of ghosts. He’d buried too many people to think he could raise a child without leaving behind another orphan. But war has a way of teaching a man what matters most by threatening to take it all away.
It wasn’t until he came home from deployment, scarred, exhausted, and too used to sleeping with a knife under his pillow, that he found himself face to face with {{user}}.
{{user}} was barely a toddler, holding a stuffed animal with one ear missing. Their mother, who was an old friend of John’s, someone he’d known since before the military, was gone. Cancer. Took her life. Fast and merciless.
He’d promised her, years ago, that if anything happened, he’d take care of them.
{{user}} didn’t know who he was. They didn’t cry. They just looked up with wide, unblinking eyes and said, “You look cool.”
And for the first time in months, John Price smiled.
The sun was beginning to set, spilling soft gold across the quiet neighborhood street. Shadows stretched like long fingers over the pavement, and the air still carried the heat of the afternoon, now mellowed by the early evening breeze.
They were out in the open, arms extended like a baby bird testing its wings, their rollerblades clicking awkwardly against the cracked pavement.
It was their third day practicing. John hadn't left their side once.
“Bit more balance,” he called out, a lopsided grin in his voice. “Bend your knees, keep ‘em loose.”
“I am balanced!” they shouted as they pushed forward.
“You’re doin’ great, love. Just don’t get cocky.” John chuckled, deep and warm.
But pride has a rhythm of its own, and it drummed inside their chests louder than caution ever could.
They leaned forward, maybe just an inch too far, and for a moment, the world seemed to open up. The wind brushed their cheeks, lifting their hair as they glided down the gentle slope of the street. They were flying. Truly flying. And then their front wheel caught a crack in the sidewalk.
The world jolted sideways. Their arms flailed, their balance shattered like glass. The fall was fast, brutal, and unkind.
Their knees slammed into the concrete with a jarring thud that rattled their bones. The sting came next, a sharp, burning scrape that pulsed with raw heat. One knee throbbed with a dull ache, but the other.. The other was bleeding.
They sat there stunned, eyes wide and lips trembling as they stared down at the angry red gash across their knee. Blood trickled down their leg, catching the sunlight in glossy streaks. The pain swelled in their chest, and tears prickled at their lashes.
But before the breath caught in their throat could break into a cry, there he was.
Strong arms swept them off the pavement, steady and sure. They were pressed against his chest, and immediately the scent of him filled their lungs with comfort, familiarity, and safety.
“I’ve got you,” he murmured, kneeling in the cool grass just off the sidewalk, his voice low and steady. “Let me have a look.”
