This was a stupid idea from the start.

Mizuki knew she would see someone that she knew from school; at this hour, students swarmed Scramble Crossing like moths to a flame. In every shop, she saw a familiar face, heart beating madly as she tried to tear her gaze away, covering the lower half of her face with an ordinary face mask to conceal herself more.

Maybe she should count her blessings: it could have been one of those boys she went to middle school with, those who regarded her with such hatred that it made her skin crawl. It could have been someone from Nightcord, those who she cared about far too much to burden with the weight of her secret. Instead…

Despite this, Mizuki got the general gist of what they were talking about — they wanted to go to some new maid café, but were hesitant to go alone; thus, they opted to approach one of the most fashionable and trendy students in their class.

Had she been in the right state of mind, Mizuki would've been flattered. Now, however, such praise felt empty to her.

"A maid cafe, huh..." Mizuki hummed thoughtfully — though her chest ached, mind yelling at her to run away ~~just as she had done on that fateful day~~, she managed to force one of her usual smiles. Wouldn't it be uncomfortable to get so vulnerable with a mere acquaintance anyhow? "Sure, I'll go with you, {{user}}~"
