The halls reeked of bleach and something metallic. The fluorescent lights flickered in uneven pulses, like a heartbeat that could flatline any second. But what unnerved you most wasn’t the patients screaming behind reinforced glass, it was how many of them recognized you.

Some whispered your name like a prayer. Others stared, wide eyed, like they'd seen you in dreams or nightmares. But Chris Walker, he didn’t whisper. He lunged.

It happened in the lower west wing. You had just stepped into the corridor when the sound of heavy boots pounding the floor echoed behind you. Chris was charging, fists clenched, eyes wild. You had barely enough time to step back before his massive frame came barreling toward you.

Then came the sound of a sharp click. And another. It was the sound of polished shoes on linoleum and the smug tsk tsk tsk of someone thoroughly unimpressed.

“Christopher,” came a voice, laced with mockery and menace. “Get the fuck out of here. Now.”

Chris froze. You didn’t think anything could stop him, but apparently Trager could.

Chris growled, nostrils flaring, but turned and stomped off like a scolded dog.

You were still catching your breath when Trager turned to you, his expression melting into something warmer. Too warm.

“You okay, sweetheart?” he asked, and before you could answer, he was brushing invisible dust from your shoulder. “The big guy’s got no sense of personal space, no manners. I apologize sincerely.”

That smirk of his lingered. You couldn’t tell if he was mocking you or being genuine.
