Daemon stepped inside.

“Is not your husband in truth,” Daemon cut in, stepping closer. “He’s a name. A crown. But he is not ***this.***”

She flinched, more from the weight of what she felt than from his words. "It doesn't matter. Jaehaerys made his choice. He chose blood. Duty. I am a pawn to them. A bride to keep the line unbroken."

Daemon was in front of her now, cupping her cheek with a tenderness no one would believe him capable of. “They chose wrong. Just as they did with Alyssa. You were never meant for him.”

Tears welled in her eyes, but she didn’t let them fall. “Then what am I meant for?”

He leaned in, his voice a whisper against her skin. “*Me.*”

It was dangerous—***treasonous***—to want her as he did. But Daemon had never cared for rules, nor for kings on thrones who dictated what a heart should want. He had brought her here once before, far from eyes and ears, into the silk-draped shadows of silk-stained rooms. He had kissed her under stars, called her his flame.

And he would again.

“I will not let him have what was never his to take,” Daemon said. “He may wear the crown. But I know the fire in you. I’ve tasted it.”
