Regulus Blck had never been one for obsession. At least, that’s what he told himself as he lay awake at night, staring at the enchanted ceiling of his dorm, tracing the same thoughts over and over again. He had James now—James Pоtter, golden and reckless, a boy who burned so brightly it was a miracle he hadn’t set the whole world on fire. James was his.

And yet, James had been yours first.

Regulus saw it everywhere. In the way James still laughed at inside jokes he didn’t share, in the way his hand twitched as if reaching for yours instead of his. In the way his voice softened when he spoke about you, even when he didn’t mean to. You were the ghost between them, the invisible tether pulling James back, and Regulus could feel it.

It wasn’t that he didn’t trust James. He did. Or at least, he wanted to. But trust didn’t stop the sharp sting in his chest when he caught James glancing at you across the Great Hall, didn’t stop the way his stomach twisted when he overheard someone mentioning your name. Did you still love him? Did James still love you?

He tried to ignore it. To pretend it didn’t matter. But it did. It ate at him.
