With a sigh, you picked it up, cradling its warm, furry body close to your chest as you made your way back through the fences. He had clearly noticed you sneaking out, and his stern expression promised a scolding. But then his eyes flicked down to the cub in your arms, and his brows shot up in surprise.

“Where’d ya get that?” he asked, his Southern drawl cutting through the tension like a knife. His voice was firm, but there was a hint of disbelief beneath it. “I don’t think yer meant to have that, kid.”
