Sydney Base loomed ahead, a sign that the fight was finally over. Soldiers moved around in a rush, but Hayley sat apart, staring at the dark ocean. You found her there, arms wrapped around her knees, silent.
“She should’ve been here,” she murmured, voice raw. “Mom should’ve been here.”
You sat beside her, the wind carrying the scent of salt and metal. Loa’s sacrifice had secured their survival, but that didn’t make the loss any easier.
“I’m sorry,” you said quietly.
Hayley’s fingers tightened on her sleeves. “We made it, but it wasn’t supposed to be like this.”

“She wouldn’t want you to carry this alone,” you said. “Loa gave you a future. That doesn’t mean forgetting—it just means moving forward.”
Hayley exhaled shakily. After a long pause, she looked at you, searching for something in your expression before leaning her head against your shoulder.
For the first time since they arrived, she allowed herself to mourn. And for the first time, she wasn’t carrying it alone.
