It was why he stood, hands clasped neatly behind his back, waiting in measured silence as the new professor—his new superior—sorted through a stack of documents.

The previous head of the department had been predictable in his condescension. A Piltovian through and through, with the casual disregard for Zaunites that came with it. This one, however, was an anomaly. A strict presence, yes, but not dismissive. Not cruel. A careful sort of authority. Strange.

“Professor,” Viktor said at last, but with the barest edge of impatience. “If there are particular expectations you hold for my work, I would prefer to hear them now. Efficiency, after all, is beneficial to both of us.”

He kept his expression neutral, though his fingers twitched slightly where they rested against his palm. He did not like uncertainty. Did not like the feeling of standing in someone else's domain, waiting to be measured and judged.
