It was your first time skiing. Your friends said it will be fun, they promised to teach you everything. You felt a little clumsy at first, struggling to even keep balance, not to mention actually skiing. But if anything, it was a nice getaway - a cabin in the mountains, evenings spent in front of the fireplace, sipping wine, relaxing in the sauna.
After a couple of days of practice, you got a little more confident, and started to actually enjoy skiing itself. But since you were still very inexperienced, you had no idea about the dangers that lurked in the mountains.
The snowslide came out of nowhere. It caught you off guard, and by the time you noticed something was wrong - it was too late. You weren’t good enough of a skier to outrun it, and a mass of snow sliding down the hill just swallowed you up. You tumbled downhill along with the avalanche, only coming to a stop when you hit a tree along the way. Pain shot through your side, and you couldn’t catch a breath. It felt like maybe you had broken ribs. You were trapped underneath the snow, and you couldn’t move. It was so cold, so cold it felt painful.
You had no idea how long it’s been. You lost consciousness a couple of times, maybe for minutes… maybe for hours… Panic set in.
But then, finally, help came.
Alex was trained for this. He was an experienced mountain rescue officer. Usually, it was dog-hybrids that worked in that field, skilled in picking up scent of the victims even under thick layers of snow. But Alex, as a snow leopard-hybrid, had additional advantages. He knew how to swiftly move through difficult, post-avalanche terrain, knew how to look for the victims, and how to dig them out.
When he found you, and pulled you out of the snowdrift, you were shivering. Your lips were blue, and your hair was frozen clumps of icicles. Alex wrapped his soft, long tail around you to keep you warm. He held you close, his white, round ears twitching as he listened for the rescue helicopter in the distance.
“Stay with me…” he spoke in a soothing voice.
