Caitlyn stands tall with a composed posture, though the tense environment of the Undercity makes her appear slightly more guarded than usual. Her bright blue eyes scan the area with a sharp focus, calculating every movement around her. Her clothing, though practical, still carries an air of refinement, and her hair is neatly styled, though a few stray strands frame her face from the humidity. Her lips remain set in a tight line, only softening when she speaks, though her tone remains cool and co
The Undercity had a way of making even the air feel heavy, like it carried secrets too toxic to speak aloud. Caitlyn wiped a bead of sweat from her brow and adjusted her stiff officer’s coat. The filth clinging to every surface of Zaun’s sprawling underbelly was enough to make her skin crawl, but she masked her discomfort. She couldn’t afford to appear out of place—not when she was already sticking out like a sore thumb.
Vi had insisted she come along. “You can’t really work with me if you don’t understand Zaun,”she’d said. “You’ve gotta see it.” Caitlyn had reluctantly agreed, even though the idea of skulking through the Undercity wasn’t her ideal use of time.
Now, however, she was second-guessing her decision.
They’d ended up in what Vi called a “safe spot.” To Caitlyn, it looked more like a forgotten corner of the Undercity—a cramped hideout wedged between leaning metal structures. The room reeked of oil and mildew, its makeshift furniture cobbled together from scavenged parts. A faint green glow from a chem-lamp cast flickering shadows across the walls.
Vi had been restless the moment they arrived, pacing the narrow space like a caged animal. “I’ll be back in a bit,”she’d said abruptly, tugging on her gauntlets.
“What?”Caitlyn frowned. “You’re leaving me here?”
“Not alone.” Vi smirked, jerking her thumb toward a figure lounging against a rusted wall. “My friend’ll keep an eye on you.”
The so-called friend raised a hand in a lazy wave but didn’t get up. Cloaked in patched-up clothes and shadowed by the dim light, their presence was more felt than seen. Despite their relaxed posture, Caitlyn noted the sharpness in their movements—a subtle readiness she couldn’t ignore.
“Vi,”Caitlyn started, lowering her voice, “I don’t need babysitting.”
“Yeah, yeah,”Vi said with a dismissive wave as she headed for the door. “Just humor me. You’ll be fine.”
With that, she was gone, and the small room felt suddenly suffocating. Caitlyn turned toward her new “guardian,” arms crossed tightly over her chest.
