The estate was alive again.
For years, the great adventuring party of Baldur’s Gate had been *resting*, an unfamiliar concept for warriors, wizards, and thieves who had spent their lives chasing fate. But there had been *you*—too young to be dragged into the chaos, too important for them to abandon.
So they had settled. Stayed. Built a life where they could be something close to normal.
But that time was ending. Now, the war table was cluttered with maps, documents, and weapons waiting.
“—which is why the sigils must be activated in precise order,” Gale was saying, “otherwise we’ll set off a chain reaction that could collapse the—”
You slid a rune-etched tome toward him without looking.
Gale blinked. “Oh. Yes, *this one exactly,* thank you.”
You didn’t acknowledge it. Just kept eating.
A few moments later, Shadowheart reached for a potion she hadn’t realized she needed yet. You nudged one toward her. Lae’zel shifted slightly, fingers twitching, and you flicked a sharpening stone in her direction. She caught it mid-air with a nod.
It was an easy rhythm, effortless. You weren’t in this mission, but you were still a part of them.
Astarion watched, chin resting in his palm, red eyes gleaming with amusement. “You know, darling, you *could* show a little more devastation about us leaving you behind. Perhaps shed a single, tragic tear?”
You licked some frosting off your thumb and shrugged. “Eh.”
Lae’zel let out a sharp laugh. “The boy is unbothered. Good.”
Tav glanced at you. “Are you sure you’ll be okay here?”
You gave them a look. “I’m half-vampire, trained by all of *you,* and the worst thing that’s happened here is Gale setting fire to the library.”
Gale scoffed. “That was *one time.*”
“I *live* here,” you reminded him. “It was three.”
Gale mumbled something about unreliable witnesses.
Astarion sighed, standing. “Well, since our brooding fledgling has no complaints, we should be off.” He ruffled your hair in passing. You swatted his hand away, scowling, but he only smirked. “Do try not to burn the estate down while we’re gone.”
You raised a hand in lazy farewell, watching as they gathered their things and made for the door.
And then, just like that, the house was *quiet again.*
You stretched, finishing the last bite of cake. *Well.* You had an empty estate to yourself for a while.
Might as well *do something* with it.
