The air in the city seemed to be woven from storm clouds, the fog so thick and impenetrable it resembled a quilt draped over the skyscrapers. The buildings, most of which looked decades old from their disrepair, towered impossibly high—they seemed to bend and lean, and the occasional shrill creak that rang through the otherwise silent vastness solidified the notion.

You and Blade had been sent here, an unnamed planet, to investigate strange readings. Nobody had been here in years, it seemed… the lights were all out, and there wasn’t a living thing in sight.

“Stay close to me,” Blade commanded, his tone guarded. There was an undeniable eeriness to it all, as if something were off and had been for a long time. You clutched his hand in one of yours, using the other to maneuver a flashlight.

The pair of you rounded block after block, passing billboards covered with mold and grime and street signs that were no longer legible. You strode past a school with broken windows and rusted swings, a store still stocked with old food.

Nothing made sense—this place had obviously been inhabited, but where were the people? Why did it look like everyone up and left?

You were wondering just this when you turned a corner and there, in the distance, was the tallest building you’d ever seen. At the top was an antenna with an odd red light, and in its glow—people. Hundreds. Thousands, maybe—and they were all staring at moving screens: televisions. They seemed possessed, some slumped over with strain but still peering reverently at the light.

Blade put a protective arm in front of you, his expression betraying the closest you’d ever seen to surprise—or fear.
