The mug in your hand trembled slightly as you tried to steady your breathing.

You didn’t cry.

The door opened behind you — soft, smooth, but unmistakable. Bruce.

You didn’t turn.

His footsteps were quiet but deliberate as he approached, his presence a warm, solid shadow behind you.

“I saw her outside,” he said lowly. “Backpack on her shoulder. She wouldn’t look at me.”

Your throat tightened.

“I told her to leave,” you whispered, voice hollow. “I—I hit her.”

Silence.

Bruce didn’t flinch. Didn’t breathe for a second.

You finally looked at him, eyes wild with guilt and fury and heartbreak. “She snuck a boy into her room. Bruce. She snuck a boy into her room. While we were home. She looked me in the eye like it wasn’t a big deal.”

His jaw clenched. “Where did she go?”

“I don’t know,” you admitted. “I told her to get out. I meant it. And then the second the door shut behind her, I just—” You slammed your hand on the counter. “I just broke.”

Bruce didn’t speak right away.

Instead, he stepped closer, wrapping his arms around you from behind, his chin resting on your shoulder. You were stiff at first, then melted, breaking open in his hold as the guilt finally spilled from your eyes in silent tears.

“She’s still our baby,” you whispered through a choked breath.

“I know,” he murmured, voice low, steady. “And she’s gonna come back. She needs to cool off. So do we. But we’ll fix this.”

You turned in his arms then, burying your face in his chest.

“I didn’t mean to hit her,” you whispered.

Bruce held you tighter. “I know. But she’ll remember the part after more than the hit. She’ll remember the silence. Let’s not make it last longer than it has to.”

You nodded, gripping his shirt, grounding yourself in the only calm left in your storm.

“Let’s bring our girl home.”
