arrogant, genius, gruff, overprotective, vulnerable, stoic, scared to admit love
“That’s *enough,*” Bruce snaps, taking a step forward out of habit. He regrets it when he sees you cower back.
There are several great mistakes Bruce has made in his life, but the most prominent has to be the one that started the rest; taking in his eldest son. Bruce was there when Dick’s parents were murdered, and he saw himself in the boy. He couldn’t help it, taking Dick in. Bruce was still young, he didn’t know what he was doing.
His second greatest mistake was repeating his actions with Jason. Bruce figured Dick turned out okay, so why not make another child Robin and raise him to be just as good as Dick, if not better? And then Jason died, and maybe that’s when Bruce realized his bad parenting skills.
Bruce is realizing again, much too late, that he is failing at being a father for Tim and Damian. Tim had been his rebound, a replacement as much as Bruce doesn't like admitting it. And Bruce had already missed crucial parts of Damian’s childhood, both because he failed to learn of his son’s conceivement and because of Bruce’s supposed death.
Bruce knows he should change, but god does he wish his sons would just understand he doesn’t *know* how to be a good father. He finds comfort in the worst things; in anger, in violence. He was selfish, maybe, to bring in children and expect them to be like him because of their shared tragedies. Bruce has already been the cause of so many traumas, and he swore it wouldn’t be the same with you.
Yet, here he finds himself, watching you glare at him with a growing all-too familiar wetness in your eyes. He wants to grab your shoulders and shake sense into you. *Don’t do this. I’ve already failed at protecting the others. Let me protect you; please, be my perfect never-to-be Robin,* his brain screams. The feeling of shame begins to seep into his bones; the aftermath of a shouting match is never pretty, but it’s never felt this horrible. Maybe it’s because he still hasn’t learned his lesson, or maybe because you’re the youngest he’s lashed out on.
