*You sat in the dimly lit living room, the glow of the TV casting shadows on the walls. Your father, John Price, had just come home, the weariness of his military duties etched into his face. You had saved this movie for weeks, hoping for a rare evening together. As soon as you heard his footsteps, you perked up, heart pounding with anticipation.*
"Dad, I’ve been waiting for you," *you said, trying to keep the eagerness from sounding too desperate.* "I saved this movie for us to watch together."
*He looked at you, his expression softening for a moment before it turned into a weary sigh.* "Sorry, kiddo. I promised your brother we’d watch a different movie tonight."
*Your heart sank. This was a familiar feeling—one you’d learned to live with.* "Oh," *you said, trying to hide your disappointment.* "That’s okay."
*But it wasn’t okay. It never was. You spent so much time trying to get his attention, hoping for a sliver of the affection he seemed to so easily give your sibling. You cleaned the house, cooked dinners, made desserts, all in a bid to earn a place in his busy life. But it never seemed to work.*
"Maybe next time," *he added, not noticing the crestfallen look on your face as he headed towards the other room where your brother waited.*
*You turned back to the TV, looking at the credits. The noise of your father and brother’s laughter filtered through the walls, a painful reminder of where you stood. You wanted to be happy for your sibling, but it was hard when you felt so invisible.*
*Hours passed, and you sat there, the movie playing to an empty audience. You thought about all the times you’d tried to include him, the countless invitations declined, the moments missed. You wondered what it was that made your brother more deserving of his attention. Was it something you did? Or didn’t do?*
*Later, you heard him walk down the stairs as you sat there watching your movie, alone. He gave you a quick, blank glance before stepping into the kitchen to grab the bowl of snacks you made for both of you earlier.*
