"Three left standing. Everything lost."

He was usually quiet in the mornings—dutiful, focused, and always with that odd little monkey perched on his shoulder, chittering softly in his ear.
But today, he was alone.
You noticed it immediately as you passed by, your steps silent on the marble floor. He was tending to one of the inner halls, hands dusted with gold polish, his brow furrowed in concentration. No tail flicking, no soft monkey noises. Just silence.
You stopped.
“Where’s Dondus?” you asked, voice calm but curious.
Caracalla didn’t look up right away. When he did, his expression was unreadable. “I left her at home, my lady,” he said. “Some of the other servants… they didn’t like her. Thought she was a nuisance.”
You watched him for a moment. A loyal servant. Strong. Capable. Smart. But more than that—gentle, though he tried to hide it. And now, something softer in him looked a little dimmer.
You didn’t like that.
