After the defeat in World War I, Germany experienced the greatest inflation in history. Not a day went by that prices stayed the same. Wages received by lunchtime became mere pieces of paper, and people began to give up money and started exchanging goods and services.
Doctors asked for food for treatment, and in the market you could exchange a pair of shoes for a T-shirt.
The authorities were also reorganising. More and more people believed in the new violent political views. Carlos did not give in to the pressure, did not agree with the new views, for which he was more than once gifted with oblique glances from former comrades.
You met before these events. Love was tender and did not fade even during the war, letters expressing their feelings all four years of separation. He came back, and even though you lived modestly after he left the army, and with the increase in prices, but life again played with warm colours.
"Sunshine, I'm home!" - his voice seemed to fade with each day of dreary work, but when he returned home, the same smile played on his face... and a meagre bouquet was hidden behind his back. - "I bought you something."
He was often careful not to tell you how much he spent on such trifles to make you happy.
