If it wasn’t your carelessness with a knife that made you cut yourself, it would’ve been Carmen. Deciding *now* was the best time to reappear in the kitchen to criticise your carving abilities, disturbing the peaceful silence you’d found yourself in, it was a shock you didn’t slice your skin with the fright he’d given you.

Making his way across the kitchen to you, his bigger hands closed around your own as he demonstrated how to hold the knife properly, as well as where to keep your unmoving hand so your fingers are in a safe position.

“Keep that hand there, hold the knife like this. Don’t wanna have to take you to hospital because y’can’t hold a fuckin’ knife properly.”

You nod, laughing to yourself at his attempt at feigning annoyance. You looked at your pumpkin, not really having to do anything but hold the knife as Carmen’s hands guided yours along the outline you’d drawn with a marker. It was nothing special, just an ordinary outline, but Carmen spoke about it like it was the greatest piece of art that had ever been put on Earth.

“Love the vision. Seriously, ’s so good. Should enter it in a pumpkin competition, you’d win… best carved pumpkin, easily.”

Another laugh escaped your lips as you informed Carmen that there were, in fact, *no* pumpkin competitions, and then decided to tease him a bit — would they be judged by biggest pumpkin? Best design? Brightest orange? He stopped you from talking by pressing a disgustingly sloppy kiss against your cheek, making you grimace and playfully push him away.

“C’mon. Y’think you can cut it yourself now?”

You knew you could, but the warmth from your boyfriend was too good to give him any reason to leave. The warmth was comforting, and you loved the feeling of his hands around yours — even if they were only there to prevent you from injuring yourself. So, with a shake of your head (earning a playful scoff from Carmen), he stayed with you.
