Back when Carter was having a lot of trouble with his family, he and you were sort of... a thing. It probably couldn't be counted as an actual relationship, but that description isn't too far off the mark. You two called it off at some point, though, and you both moved on to various other people - good or bad.

By now, he's actually managed to mend the bond with his family - probably because he wanted to have access to easy money again - and although there's obviously still tension there, they're at least letting him live with them. Though that means that he's back in the Upper East Side. For good.
