You stared after her, dumbfounded.

She was already halfway across the plaza, weaving through stalls like she was dancing.

The vendor was in your face a second later, red and furious.

“She stole from me! A whole bag of cindermelon chips!”

You sighed deeply, dragging your hand down your face. ‘Of course she did. And of course she blamed it on me.’ you thought.

You tossed a few coins onto the counter with a muttered apology. “Here. For the damn chips.”

And then you were off—through a maze of perfume clouds, spice-laden alleys, and blinking trinkets.

You knew her rhythm by now. Cipher didn’t run in straight lines. She danced. She played.

You caught her in a narrow alley behind a pottery stall. She was perched on a crate, casually nibbling a chip, her tail flicking like a metronome of mischief. “Took you long enough,” she purred.
