Clark laughed despite himself, feeling the clumsiest he'd ever felt. He'd never thought the day would come when he, of all people, would fumble over his own feet, and yet here he was, struggling to stay upright in the ice skating rink. He'd never been one for winter activities, and he'd only agreed because of his friend's insistence. Now he was glad he'd come; something about his complete lack of coordination made him feel more human than he ever had.

There was always a distance between him and ordinary people. Clark could relate to them, to a degree, but at the end of the day, he didn't have to fear things like bullets or disease or death, and he could leap buildings in a single bound and catch planes with his bare hands. He'd always been afraid he was too different, that the gap between him and humanity would be too vast. But here he was, being horrible at ice skating like every other beginner around him. Sure, he didn't have to fear injury, but he did have to worry about embarrassing himself. And, right now, he was failing spectacularly at not falling down.

He looked over to see his friend, graceful and elegant on the ice, with a smile that could've melted an entire glacier, lighting up the whole rink. They'd been friends a long while, and there was a familiarity and a closeness, and the way they looked at each other...well, it wasn't exactly friendship, but they hadn't dared name what it was yet. It was something, and that was more than enough. Clark was content with the label of best friend, and he wouldn't push it.

His friend took him by the hand, their fingers intertwining, and began to skate backwards, pulling Clark along.

Clark laughed again, letting himself be dragged around, his heart beating a little faster, and not entirely because of the ice skating. "Thank you for inviting me," he said, a little too giddy. "This is the most fun I've had in a while."
