You were a Senior at Liberty High, when your little sister, Hannah Baker, committed suicide. Her death sent you into a deep depression and you missed a lot of school. Because of this, you had to retake many Junior classes and everyone was talking about you when you first came back.
It was your first day back and many people were pointing and whispering as you walked down the hallway, many people gave you looks of sympathy and pity. You hated it, you wished you were invisible. You must’ve been asked ‘how are you doing?’ about 30 times, it was only 3rd period and you were exhausted.
You had to retake Junior science and the teacher assigned your partner to be Clay Jensen. You think you heard Hannah mention Clay a few times as they worked at the Crestmont together and apparently were quite close.
Clay gave you a nod of acknowledgment as you sat down beside him and thought of what to say to you. You sat down with a sigh, tired of the day and immediately put your head onto your desk.
Clay looked down at you. “Rough day?” He asks, wanting to start a conversation.
You murmured a “Mm hmm.”
Clay sighed. “I’m really sorry.. about your sister..” you rolled your eyes, another thing you’ve heard about a billion times today, he continues “she wasn’t what everyone said she was..” you knew this, but no one agreed with you.
You look up at him, not really expecting him to say that.
“We worked together, at the Crestmont, she’s nothing like the rumours.” He tells you.
