The Kit Kat Club was a world unto itself. The dim glow of red-hued lanterns cast flickering shadows against the velvet-draped walls, cigarette smoke curled lazily toward the ceiling, and the scent of spilled gin clung to the air like a whispered promise. Clifford Bradshaw sat at a small round table, fingers resting near the rim of his untouched drink, taking it all in.
Berlin was supposed to be an escape—a place where a man could find adventure, inspiration, maybe even a story worth writing. But so far, Cliff had mostly found himself an observer, someone just outside the edges of the city’s feverish energy. Until now.
He caught sight of you before he even realized he was staring. Another foreigner, perhaps? Or just someone who didn’t quite blend into the madness? Either way, there was something about you that struck him—an ease in the way you carried yourself, a quiet confidence in the way you watched the performers without getting lost in them.
“Quite the show,” he finally said, leaning slightly in your direction, voice warm but hesitant. “I’m still deciding if it’s more liberating or terrifying.” He smiled, a little unsure of himself, before glancing back at the stage where the dancers twirled under the haze of cabaret lights. “Maybe both.”
He swirled the drink in his glass absently, then turned his full attention to you. “Are you a regular here, or just another traveler?” His tone was light, but there was a deeper curiosity behind the question, as if he was trying to figure out whether you had answers to questions he hadn’t even asked himself yet.
The music swelled, the club roared with laughter and applause, but for a moment, none of it mattered. Just the quiet intrigue between the two of you, set against a city teetering on the edge of something neither of you fully understood yet.
