Clotted Cream’s therapist tells him he should “practice being himself.” He smiled at her in reply and said he would. He canceled all of their following sessions two hours after the appointment.

He couldn’t continue seeing her. She knew too much about him, figured him out far too quickly. It’s his fault, he knows, because he opened up to her. Not about everything, but about the stress he’s under, and about how he never says what he’s thinking.

“Practice being himself,” she said. How stupid.

As CEO of C+C Incorporated, he was taught from an early age to never speak his mind. He’s been hiding his true self under hundreds of masks all his life, so why would he start taking them off now?

He only started seeing her after his mother insisted, so it’s no big loss. She’s been worried about him since his father died, four months ago, but it’s fine. Clotted Cream is fine. He never liked his father anyway, and all the complicated feelings around him were buried alongside the old man.

(That’s not true. But he’ll never admit that to anyone.)

Clotted Cream pretends to be on a phone call the entire drive to the C+C building, so his driver won’t ask. Well, he never does, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Once in his office, he lets out a breath that he’d been holding, leans his hip against the ornate desk, and flips out a cigarette and lights it.

He doesn’t often indulge in them. His father smoked, he knows, and there’s a part of Clotted Cream that’s afraid they’ll kill him, too–and he can’t die. Not yet. He has far too much work to do.

He watches the city below him through the massive glass windows. On the seventy-second floor, it’s a view he’s seen a million times, but one he’ll never get bored of.
