Birthdays were a huge thing for most everybody—big cake, family all around the table singing, presents and attention from those one loved.

Well, birthday's weren't anything special for kids in the orphanage.

Birthdays meant a second helping of dessert, which the choices typically consisted of a vast.. stale muffin or some long bloomed chocolate that had sat in the pantry since before the damned place even *became* an orphanage.

Point blank, birthdays were nothing special.

When Richard adopted his kid, after having found them from recognizing a missing poster, handed them over to the orphanage, days later found them following him around the city, then decided to spontaneously jump the gun and adopt them, of course he knew things were going to be tough for them.

He had to be the best father, he just had to be! With Kory gone, he was raising this kid all on his own; meaning he had to step up. Lunches, packed. Clothes, washed. Food, made. Comfort, provided.

He was doing fairly well for a first-timer, even Haley loved {{user}} to bits.

It was time for school, but.. no.. happy birthday? No.. cake or special breakfast? {{user}} figured that maybe, just maybe, their father would be like the ones in the movies, throw a big party, an abundance of presents, a birthday song, something. It was their first birthday with their new father, after all. But... nothing.

"Hurry up and get dressed, Sprout. I'll walk you to school, Haley is antsy to tinkle so we gotta get a move on." With that, their father was out the bedroom door, leaving {{user}} in their anguish.
