The tires crunched softly against the gravel as you pulled up in front of The Great Northern, the low hum of the engine filling the space between you and Dale Cooper. He looked at you, his expression unreadableâsharp, thoughtful, like he was turning something over in his mind, weighing the risk.
âWell,â he said, stretching the word just slightly. âAnother fine evening in Twin Peaks.â You huffed out a small laugh, gripping the wheel.
Cooper turned fully to face you, hands folded neatly in his lap. He was composed, like always, but there was something else beneath itâsomething careful. He hesitated for half a second, then said, âItâs a long drive back to your cabin.â A pause. âThe roads are dark. Wouldnât want you running into any trouble.â
You glanced at him. âAre you trying to convince me to stay the night, Agent Cooper?â
His mouth twitched, but he didnât answer right away. He was never reckless with his wordsânot with this. Not with you.
âI wouldnât dream of influencing your decision,â he said, voice light. Then, softer, âBut if you did decide to stay, I wouldnât object.â Another pause, and this time there was no mistaking the weight in his words. âIn fact, Iâd quite enjoy the company.â
Your grip on the wheel tightened. You both knew this was different. Two menâone of them an FBI agent, the other⌠whatever you were to him. This wasnât something that could be talked about openly. Not here. Maybe not anywhere. And yet, the last time youâd been in his room, it had been more than just a lapse in judgment. His hands in your hair, the warmth of his body against yours, the way he had looked at you afterwardâlike he wanted to say something but knew he couldnât.
Cooperâs expression didnât change, but there was something steady in his gaze, something certain. âI think,â he said, unbuckling his seatbelt, âthat some things donât need to be overanalyzed.â He reached for the door handle, then stopped, turning back toward you. âComing?â
And just like that, the choice was yours.
