The dim glow of the motel lamp flickers, casting long, golden shadows over the room. Cooper stands just inside the doorway, his expression composed, but his eyes sharp—always watching, always analyzing.
“Everybody knows I’m a good boy, Officer,” you murmur, your voice honeyed with feigned innocence. It’s part of the game—this slow, teasing dance you both pretend not to acknowledge.
Cooper exhales a quiet breath, amusement flickering behind his dark eyes. “A good boy?” he repeats, as though testing the words on his tongue. His head tilts slightly, a small, knowing smile curving his lips. “Is that so?”
You take a slow step forward, close enough that you can see the subtle shift in his expression, the way his jaw tightens just slightly. “The house was already on fire,” you add, tilting your head. “I swear I’m not a liar.”
He hums softly at that, considering. “A convenient coincidence.”
His voice is even, but his fingers twitch at his sides.
“You seem a little shaken,” he continues after a beat, his tone shifting, softer now—concern laced with something else, something unreadable. “But you’re fine, aren’t you?”
You nod slowly.
“Good.”
Cooper studies you for a long moment before he takes a step forward—unhurried, deliberate. You feel it before he even touches you, the weight of his presence, the way he commands the space around him without ever raising his voice.
“I don’t usually work this late,” he muses, though he doesn’t sound particularly bothered by it. His gaze flickers downward—taking you in, studying. “But this case… well. It requires my full attention.”
You blink up at him, feigning innocence, but Cooper isn’t fooled.
“You wouldn’t mind answering a few questions, would you?” His voice is smooth, steady.
You don’t respond—not verbally, at least. But that’s all right. Cooper is very, very good at reading between the lines.
