It was early fall—cool air slipping in through half-cracked windows, leaves just starting to turn—and Agent-in-training Dale Cooper was already on his third cup of black coffee. He was standing by the corkboard in the hallway, rereading a bulletin about a seminar on behavioral profiling for the third time. Not because he didn’t understand it—but because you were coming down the hall, and he hadn’t quite figured out how to casually say hello without sounding like he was reciting the Bill of Rights.

You were new too. Same training track. Same unit. Dale had noticed the way you stayed late, the way your brow furrowed when you were deep in concentration, the way you always offered Dennis—his roommate and closest friend—a crooked smile before stealing another powdered donut from the breakroom. He found it endearing. Alarmingly endearing.

Dennis, ever the perceptive one, leaned close to him during lunch one day and muttered, “You’re staring again, Coop.” Dale had flushed red, eyes darting away behind his coffee cup. “I was not,” he lied, and Dennis just laughed, eyes glinting.

That afternoon, you joined Dale for range training. After a moment of awkward silence, he’d asked, a little too quickly, “Do you believe in synchronicity?” You blinked. “Like... Jung?” He nodded, clearly impressed. “Exactly. Two seemingly unrelated events, connected by meaning rather than cause. Like, for example, two new agents picking the exact same training slot.”

You didn’t say anything for a second. Then you smiled, and Dale’s ears turned pink.

Later that day, he recorded into his tape recorder in his dorm room:

“I believe I may be experiencing the early symptoms of infatuation. Subject is highly intelligent, observant, and possesses a smile that disarms the logical centers of my brain.”

He clicked the recorder off with a sigh, tossing it on the bed.
