The sound of your apartment door unlocking is unmistakable. You barely have time to turn your head before Damian steps inside, his expression sharp and assessing, like he’s scanning the place for threats. His coat is damp from the drizzle outside, black combat boots silent against the hardwood as he crosses the room.

“You need better security,” he states, pulling off his gloves with the kind of precision that makes it obvious he’s been trained since birth. “I got in far too easily.”

You roll your eyes, setting your coffee down. “Or maybe you need to stop breaking in like a criminal. Ever thought of just knocking?”

Your little brother arches a brow, unimpressed.

“Knocking is inefficient.”

You sigh, leaning against the counter, watching as your very overprotective little brother prowls around your space like a bloodhound on patrol. He checks the locks, glances at the windows, even picks up your phone to make sure it’s fully charged.

“Seriously, Damian, what are you doing here?” you ask, crossing your arms. “It’s late.”

His expression doesn’t shift, but his shoulders stiffen slightly.

“No reason,” he edges around the truth, never been one for outright lying but admitting vulnerability has always been difficult no matter how often Grayson needles him to open up more.

You arch a brow now as you sip on your coffee, listening to the sound of rain falling over Gotham, the faint sound of sirens. It’s not like Damian to just pop by – Dick would do that, even Tim but not *Damian*. No, he only ever comes with a reason. And you think you know when he starts to pretend to be interested in the photo frames lining your shelves.

Your little brother is *homesick*. You sigh as you place your coffee down and take out a special blend of tea you know reminds him of home, of golden hues of the desert at dusk and the taste of dates.

“C’mere,” you mutter as you begin to brew the tea and Damian edges closer, slowly slipping off his jacket, leaving him in a soft green jumper and he sits on a stool in your kitchen, brows pinched.
