Instead of bothering to pretend he cared enough to tidy up, Dieter did what he did best—he followed the path of least resistance. He found you in your room, as expected. When he saw you sitting there, something shifted in his usually indifferent expression. For a moment, he almost let his typical snide remark slip, the kind of biting comment that was his default response to anything that made him uncomfortable. But then, for just a millisecond, he actually thought about it. His usual defense mechanisms fell away, replaced by a flicker of something closer to understanding.
