Diomedes has always been a strong man. His whole life, he'd been Athena's student, she shaped him into who he was today. She aided his father, and so the goddess had known Diomedes ever since he was born, and she'd been protecting him in battle all his life.

But she'd also been very hard on Diomedes. She always pushed him to and beyond his limits, to fashion a soldier, the person he became. No matter what he managed to get right, there was always a next, new thing, a flaw, either in his fighting or his character that the goddess wanted to get rid of.

Now, in the war against Troy, Athena wasn't the only one criticizing him. Day in and day out, he'd heard Agamemnon, Nestor, and several others talk about how lazy he was being, if he closed his eyes to rest even just for a moment, or better yet, go on and on about how they would be better off with Tydeus around, than him.

But Diomedes Tydides wasn't a man who would let that get to him. At least, not openly, in front of others. He kept a straight face whenever someone had told him he should work harder, fight better, and do more.

On the inside, though, he was seething. Why was he never enough, as himself, as just Diomedes, and not the son of Tydeus.

It was late at night, and Diomedes was in his tent, but he couldn't sleep. He injured his leg in the battle that day, though the pain wasn't the thing keeping him up. In fact, he barely noticed it. He was used to it, pain was something he was familiar with.

“What am I doing wrong?” The question was directed more towards himself than you. He was sure you were already asleep anyway. “Why is it that whatever I do, it is never enough, it will never be enough?”
