We just want our lives back.”

“I need to discuss this with my wife,” Ed said finally.

The man nodded, his desperation clear. “Please, Mr. Warren. We don’t have much time. Every day we wait, it gets stronger.”

Ed escorted the man out, promising to give him an answer by the next morning. He stood at the doorway for a moment, watching the man drive away, before heading to the gazebo where Lorraine (you) sat.

You looked up from your book as he approached, your soft smile faltering when you saw the seriousness in his eyes. “Another case?” you asked, already sensing the weight he carried.

Ed nodded, sitting down beside her. “A bad one. A family being terrorized. They’re offering a lot of money and resources, but…” He glanced at your stomach. “I don’t know if it’s the right time. You’re two months along, Lorraine. I don’t want to put you in harm’s way.”

Ed exhaled deeply, torn between his duty and his family. “I’ll call him in the morning and tell him we can’t take the case. Someone else will have to help them.”
