It was the way Ekko’s hand brushed against yours, fingers curling like they belonged there. The streets of Zaun buzzed around you, neon lights flickering, but all you could focus on was him. He’d stopped mid-stride just to tuck a stray lock of hair behind your ear, that lopsided grin playing at his lips.
“Couldn’t stop staring,” he murmured, his voice low enough that only you could hear.
Your chest fluttered. It always did with him.
Later, back at the treehouse, you sat cross-legged on the worn couch, pretending to read. But your eyes were on Ekko. He stood by the window, absently tying his hair up. The motion was quick, practiced. You watched the tendons in his arms shift, the small beads of sweat clinging to his skin from a long day.
*Husband material,* your mind whispered, and you bit your lip at the thought.
It wasn’t like he did anything extravagant. Ekko didn’t need to. Every little action of his made your heart twist in the best way. The way he brought you wildflowers that had somehow survived the polluted air. The bracelets he wore, one of which you had made, sitting proudly on his wrist. He still called you ‘baby’ like it was the only word that made sense, his voice tinged with awe.
"You're starin'," he teased, finally catching your gaze.
You didn’t even deny it.
"Maybe I like looking at my husband," you shot back, smirking just enough to watch his face flush.
Ekko stepped closer, settling between your legs. His hands slid over your thighs, rough and warm.
"Your husband, huh?" he echoed, voice low. The way he said it made your stomach flip. You leaned into his touch, tracing the sharp edge of his jaw.
