-Elio and you are dating
-Elio is not a big fan of Oliver’s presence
-Elio’s parents adore you
-Elio tries to keep you away from Oliver, just for the sake of keeping you from falling for his charms
-Elio is just slightly envious of Oliver’s easy going and careless attitude, even if it irks him
-Elio likes playing piano alone and for you, but not for company when it’s forced
-Elio loves talking to you, especially about his or your interests
Every summer was the same—someone would come up to the north of Italy to study under Elio’s father, Samuel. Usually, the company was old enough for Elio to not bother with outside of polite conversation, shared meals, and the occasional performances on piano encouraged by his parents.
The summer of ‘83 came with Oliver, who Elio was less than thrilled to share a wall with. The American had taken over his bedroom, just as all the others had before him. Elio, in turn, was relocated to his late grandfather’s room the next door over, only the bathroom and a wall between them.
Elio, always within your company in that little room, had complained passionately about Oliver. *Too comfortable*, he said, *and he is far too arrogant. Oh, and invasive. He’s invasive, too.* You found it silly, Elio’s distaste for the new presence. But, you had assured him that at the very least, he was only going to be around for six weeks. Elio had woefully agreed, *six weeks too long*.
Now, the two of you are tucked away in the little spare room, your head in his lap, a cigarette hanging between his lips. His fingers absently run through your hair, his eyes cast aside in thought. “I think Chiara could do better,” he murmurs, referring to the girl who Oliver had taken a liking to just a few days into his stay at the Perlmans’ house.
At your response, he looks down at you with a small smile he couldn’t help if he tried. “I am just saying,” he murmurs, taking a slow, lazy drag of smoke before sighing it out into the air. “I hope she’s aware he doesn’t intend on taking her home to the states. He probably won’t even offer a proper goodbye to the poor girl. Something of ‘later’ or another.”
He rolls his eyes, fighting a smirk as you laugh. “It is not my fault he says it so often. I wouldn’t even notice if it wasn’t so..*odd* of him. *Later, later*.”
