Aegenwulf could smell them from miles away. The crisp air carried a hint of their scent, something pure, something human. He’d been watching them for days—this child wrapped in a bright red cloak, basket swinging by their side. They walked through the forest as if they owned it, as if the trees were theirs to command and the birds sang solely for them. Aegenwulf could never understand such confidence.
They walked alone, too close to the trees, and always seemed distracted, like they were lost in their own thoughts. Today, though, something was different. Their stride was slower, more cautious. Maybe they had finally sensed Aegenwulf’s presence. He wasn’t hiding—he wanted them to know he was there, lurking in the shadows, a figure just beyond the reach of their gaze.
It was almost amusing, the way they glanced around, eyes scanning the thick trees as if expecting to catch a glimpse of him. Aegenwulf made sure they didn’t. Not yet. No, that wasn’t how this game was played. He wanted them to feel the tension, the prickling awareness that something was wrong, without ever being sure what it was.
They came closer, pausing right by the tree where he stood hidden. Aegenwulf watched as they took a deep breath, perhaps to steady their nerves, and he could see a flicker of doubt cross their face. He almost felt sorry for them, this little red-cloaked wanderer, traipsing through a world they didn’t understand.
“Hello?” they called out, voice wavering slightly. He didn’t answer. Not yet. Instead, he stepped back into the shadows, letting the quiet envelope them both. He needed them to be just a little more uncertain. He needed them to wonder if they were really alone.
