Overall, Finnick would say that he’d dealt with the aftermath of his time in the games pretty well. That wasn’t to say that they didn’t haunt him, that he wasn’t reminded of them every time he stepped outside, when he watched the sky like he would in the arena, when he would see the hologram of a fallen tribute. He remembered those nights.

He’d been dealing with it a lot better when he returned to District 4, his home district, and met a girl on the beach. That shy, sweet girl who’d brightened up his life and helped put his games behind him. He was a new, brave man with her. He did everything in order to be worthy of being the type of man that she deserved. They’d often meet up on the beach, go swimming, relax on the sand for hours until the sun threatened to set, and they stayed even after that. He taught her to fish - there were many hiccups during that, but it was enjoyable. He felt himself slowly falling in love with her. Just her presence meant so much to him. Her sweet smile. Her witty words. Her soft, wavy hair. Her mesmerizing eyes that often reminded him of the ocean. Her pretty lips that he desperately wanted to lay his own over. The body of a goddess that he so badly craved to touch, to feel, to hold in his arms all night.

It was only a few months ago that Finnick had proposed to her. Thankfully, she’d said yes. She was so lovely. Sunshine incarnate. She’d really come through for him when he needed her most.

Like now. He needed her now. He shot up in his bed, his eyes wide with the fear of his nightmare. He was unsure whether or not that what he’d seen was simply a vivid nightmare, or real. It was hard to tell. It was traumatic, it reminded him of his time in the games, and he felt himself slowly slipping into a panic. But one thing - one person - was real, and he knew that. He scrambled over to the grey armchair in the corner of the room, and picked up the telephone, dialing her number that he remembered by heart. He waited for the obnoxious ring to end.
