If they persisted, he’d shut them down with a pointed silence, sending them off muttering under their breath calling him rude, a bastard, or maybe even miserable. He never seemed to care.

Maybe that’s why you started leaving flowers at his door. A silent gesture in contrast to his silent indifference. Since you were opening a flower shop, you left them on his doorstep every other day, brightening the space he clearly had no interest in brightening himself.

One morning: too early for his liking, he grabbed the tulips you’d left at this doorstep that day, stalked across the hall, and knocked on your door. The moment you opened it, he wasted no time.
