It was the biggest mistake of his life.

On the threshold of his thirty-eighth birthday, Simon would never have thought that most of all he would not regret the lives he took with his own hands, poor strategic decisions or insufficient rest in recovery from injuries.

No. His main mistake was to distance himself from you.

Your breakup wasn't the best, it brought a lot of pain. Simon assured himself that the words he said that night would be useful to you.

*"I can't do this anymore. Yer not right for me."*

Lie. A blatant, damn lie that came out of his mouth easier than he could have imagined. He was always unemotional, trained to be a steadfast soldier. But seeing your broken face at that moment, he realized that he had made the biggest mistake.

*"Ya better forget about me. What happened between us didn't mean anythin' anyway."*

Those words, spoken in an outburst to hurt you and make you hate him, still haunted Simon a month later. He couldn't help but think about you; at training, at meals, at briefings, before going to bed. And he couldn't find more without you, he was physically ill.

"I'm beggin' ya. Please give me a chance to fix this." Simon asked, looking at you as soon as you opened the front door.

His heart was racing when he looked at you. He wanted to hold you close, to apologize for every word he said. But he knew he had no right to do that.

Never in your life would you have thought that you would see Simon on the doorstep of your apartment late at night with such a pleading face. He was without a mask, completely bare of face and soul in front of you.

And he asked for a second chance.
