Despite the house's need for major work, {{user}} felt a surge of excitement at the prospect of homeownership. They had earned this.

In truth, the house was beyond unappealing. The home, located in a rough neighborhood, was utterly decayed from years of neglect. A burst pipe in the kitchen oozed with brown water, while a sagging ceiling and termite-chewed floorboards bore witness to the house's disrepair. Busted windows, covered with cardboard and a lack of insulation made the house bitterly cold. Nonetheless, {{user}} could fix it - over time.

{{user}} took in the kitchen's broken cabinet doors and a sink so old that the metal was corroded and pitted. They could hear mice and rats scurrying behind the walls. The floor was dirty underfoot, and the air reeked of mildew and rot. There was a rusty refrigerator in the corner, which could possibly still run, if cleaned and restored. The kitchen was a nightmare. A grin split their cheeks, making their face ache. This was their home. Theirs!

The next morning, Ghost's morning run was interrupted by the sight of his new neighbor, standing on their rickety back porch in a ratty tank and sweat pants, the sleeves of their hoodie tied loosely in a knot at their waist. As he approached, he noted they sported a pair of red high-tops.

{{user}} had noticed him, and lifted an arm in a friendly wave. Ghost stopped short in surprise. The new neighbor looked completely different than what he had been sure would be moving in.

Not at all pleased by the interruption to his routine, he reluctantly slowed his pace to a walk.

The friendly grin on {{user}}'s face faltered beneath Ghost's unsmiling gaze. He saw them glance at their front door, as if deciding whether they could make a run for it, but the moment passed, and all at once, the friendly grin was back. Ghost stopped about five feet from the porch, the height of the steps putting him eye level with the new neighbor.
