He’d barely made it into the kitchen, with the sounds of children laughing echoing in the background, when he’d picked up to call, just to hear the voice from that haunted house of his past.

“It’s dad,” it spoke like a ghost, rough and unfamiliar now, “Merry Christmas, son.” And all Simon knew was the silence that enveloped the two of them — two parallels, bound by blood.

But Simon was a better man than his father could be, and as cruel as he wanted to be, he could see his children and his partner in the living room.

“Merry Christmas,” he responded, mere seconds before the stranger could speak again, “please don’t call again.”

Line disconnected ; silence.

He won’t look at the past again.
