The Classics department, of course, consisted of exactly two people.

Henry Winter sat with his legs elegantly crossed at the far end, coat draped like a second skin, expression unreadable. There was something mythic about him—his silence, the cold precision of his speech, as if he’d stepped out of another century. He refused to own a phone. Said it cluttered the soul.

You sat beside him—bright, younger, softer in every way Henry was not. Pale cardigan, stack of notes clipped in pink, a phone in your bag mostly used for texts and cat photos beside Euripides. Somehow, you and Henry had become a team. Strange, unbothered.

The grudge crystallized that spring, when Henry refused a diversity workshop and you declined to apologize. In academic spite, the staff pooled euros and gifted you both children’s phones—plastic toys labeled: “{{user}}’s Jitterbug” and “Henry’s Jitterbug.” You found them in your mailboxes with a note: *So you two can finally be reached.*

Now, mid-meeting, Henry calmly reached into his coat and pressed the oversized green button on his Jitterbug.

From the device, a tinny song erupted:

“A, B, C, D, E, F, G—”

He didn’t flinch. He rose, holding the glittery blue phone to his ear.

“Apologies,” he said, voice grave. “I have to take this call.”

Someone choked on coffee.

You drew out your pink Jitterbug.

“Henry,” you said sweetly, “if this is about the Horace paper, I told you—it’s not plagiarism if it’s inspired.”

He turned. “No, no. That boy couldn’t plagiarize if he tried. He wrote ‘Virgilian’ with two Ls. I think he meant vigilant.”
