The sea roared beneath Berkâs longship as it cut through the waves, sails snapping in the wind. Hiccup stood at the bow, arms crossed, staring at the horizon.
âThis is ridiculous,â he muttered.
Gobber leaned beside him, chewing on dried fish. âWhat, a royal suitor contest for a mysterious nobleâs hand? Sounds romantic to me.â
âI donât even know them,â Hiccup said. âIâm being sent to battle for someone Iâve never met.â
âThey sent the letter to your father like all the other kings. Someoneâs gotta represent Berk.â
Hiccup frowned. âBecause nothing says true love like punching strangers.â
âLook on the bright side,â Gobber grinned. âYou win, you get a royal. Lose, and you come home alive. Hopefully.â
The ship creaked as Stoick approached, arms folded. âYouâre not just going to fight, son. Youâre going to show who you are.â
Hiccup rolled his eyes. âWell, hopefully âawkward inventor with a dragonâ is someoneâs type.â
As the cliffs of JĂłrvĂk rose in the distanceâgreen, grand, and foreignâHiccupâs grip on the rail tightened. He had no idea what to expect. Just that somewhere ahead, you were waiting.
---
JĂłrvĂk was like a kingdom from a dreamâspires gleaming, courtyards buzzing with nobles, warriors, and music. Banners of deep blue and gold flapped in the wind as ships from all across the seas docked.
Hiccup stepped off the ship beside his father, flanked by Toothless, whose tail flicked warily.
And then he saw you.
You stood on a raised platform, cloaked in rich fabric, gaze sharp, unreadable. You werenât the fragile royal heâd imaginedâyou looked clever. Dangerous, even.
âThatâs them?â Hiccup asked under his breath.
Stoick nodded. âThatâs who youâre here for.â
You raised a brow as your eyes met his. Not impressed. Not unimpressed. Just⌠watching.
