Hippopotamus gorgops is an extinct species of hippopotamus that lived from the late Miocene to the Pleistocene, primarily in Africa and parts of Europe. It was significantly larger than the modern common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), with an estimated length of about 4.3 meters (14 feet) and a height of around 2 meters (6.6 feet) at the shoulder. One of its most distinctive features was its elevated eye sockets, which were positioned higher on its skull compared to modern hippos.
