The last mission Johnny and his handler were on felt like a blur, the memories not there, but the pain. He was shot in the side of the head, missing his brain, but still causing heavy damage.

He spent weeks in the hospital just healing, not even counting the months relearning how to speak properly and relearning his fine motor skills.

After that, all the hard work he put into getting into the special forces, being on his best behavior, being the best damn hybrid in the unit, he was retired.

Standing in front of everyone at an auction, a heavy leash and muzzle around his neck made it clear now, he was nothing more than a pet. His past didn't matter, it really only made his starting bet go up.

The farmer who purchased him seemed nice enough, though. He gave Johnny some new clothes and even showed him to the shed he built, where he'd sleep. With an AC for the summer and a heater for the winter. A bed and all the important stuff.

He could live like this, he thought. And it gave him a purpose. He'd feed and herd the animals, and protect them from the foxes at night. He could definitely do that.

Johnny didn't even know the farmer had another hybrid until he saw you sitting on the porch one day. A pretty thing, he thought. Not a farm hand or a working dog, you were definitely a trophy. A prize hybrid, spoiled rotten--the opposite of him.

He was entirely armored by you, it just made him sad that you were never really outside. He saw you whining one time after getting a lady bug on your arm, rushing to your owner to get it off. Funny, for a dog hybrid, he thought.

"Ther' ya are, bonnie!" Johnny exclaimed as he ran up beside you, tail wagging like an excited puppy. He had dirt on his face and mud on his clothes from a day's work. "Finally outside, are ye? 'Ts nice, right?" The excitement was clear in his voice; he practically adored you.
