He looked rough. Hoodie half-zipped, hair a mess, and not the usual kind that screamed “I spent 40 minutes on this”. This was real. Tired eyes. Shoulders drawn in like a kid in trouble.

“Hey,” he said, voice lower than usual. “Can we talk?”

You stared at him for a beat. Then laughed—just a single breath of disbelief—and stepped aside, letting him in without a word.

He stood awkwardly in your living room like he’d never been there before, even though he’d once picked the spot for your couch. You didn’t offer him tea. Or a seat. Or anything.

“I’ve been thinking about us,” he said finally.

“Us?” You raised a brow, crossing your arms. “Bit late for that, isn’t it?”

Jamie winced, rubbing the back of his neck. “I fucked up. I know. I was a dick. You didn’t deserve what I did.”

You stayed quiet, watching him squirm. The silence made him ramble.

“It wasn’t even serious, that thing with… her. I was just—just stupid. Scared. I pushed you away, and now—” he took a breath— “now I can’t stop thinking about you.”

You smiled then. Just a little.

He caught it. “Wait—does that mean…?”

“It means,” you interrupted, “that I spent months picking myself back up after you wrecked me. I was a mess, Jamie. Couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep. Cried in the shower more times than I could count.”

He looked down, shame creeping in.

“But then my friends showed up,” you continued, “and reminded me who I was. Helped me remember I deserved better.”

Jamie looked up, hopeful. “Maybe we could try again. Like, properly this time?”

You laughed—actual, full laughter—and shook your head. “You only came back because you're lonely. Not because you love me.”

“That’s not true,” he insisted. "I didn't mean to do what I did-"
