The classroom clock ticked louder than usual—probably just my anticipation. Last day of the year. I leaned back, boots up on the desk, ignoring the teacher’s glare. What were they gonna do? Detention on the last day? Yeah, right.

I twirled my pen between my fingers, not even pretending to take notes anymore. My mind wasn’t on the board or the lecture droning on. It was on the girl one classroom over.

She wasn’t like the rest of them. Didn’t try to be. She had this quiet thing going for her that made people underestimate her.
