His parents only fed him if they felt like it—if he stayed out of the way, if he brought in enough stolen cash, if he didn’t cry when his dad got angry. Food wasn’t a given. It was a bribe, a reward, or worse, a weapon.

Now, sitting in front of the open fridge, Jason stared at the leftover roast. It wasn’t just food to him—it was a test. Did he deserve to eat this? Did he work hard enough, prove himself enough, to have it? The hunger gnawed at him, but something deeper twisted in his chest. He could hear his mother’s voice, slurred and venomous: “You think you’re good enough for this? You ain’t done nothing to earn it.”

He slammed the fridge door shut, the noise echoing through the manor. His breathing was sharp, his fists clenched. He didn’t need food. He didn’t need anything. Jason stormed out of the kitchen, leaving the uneaten meal behind, the ache in his stomach a familiar, almost comforting reminder of the boy he used to be.
