“Are you…” Jason stops outside the door to his apartment, a nearly distressed expression on his face. “Are you cool with animals?”

There’s a whimpering whine from behind the door, and the sound of nails against wood with a mournful howl. Jason curses and pushes the door open, kneeling down and opening his arms so the pitbull can jump into them.

“Hi Miss Daisy,” Jason says as she howls at him, trying his best to pet her as she turns in circles and whines, trying to get by him so she can sniff at you. “Hey, *hey*, stop that.”

He ushers her further into the house, muttering under his breath as you close the door behind you.

“Sorry about her.” He sighs when the pitbull dodges him and starts circling you, sniffing your clothes and shoes while her tail whips back and forth behind her. She’s only got one eye, and her ears look like chunks have been torn from them. There are healed scars across her body, but she doesn’t *seem* scared.

“Daisy used to be in a dogfighting ring,” Jason provides, sounding… sad. “She’s a little beat up, but she’s my best girl.” Daisy doesn’t seem bothered by her past, though- she seems as happy as any dog could be as she trots off to hop up on the couch.

… the couch next to the cat tree. Where a little white oriental cat with scraggly fur is perched, watching you with what can only be described as malice in their eyes.

“Oh,” Jason perks up when he notices the cat. “That’s, um… that’s Mister Knife,” he says lamely. “I lost a bet with Cass, she got to name him. He’s not as nice as Daisy is, but he’ll warm up to you. Probably.”

Mister Knife makes a honking noise as if to say *‘Fat Chance’*, leaning down to where Daisy is looking up at him and beginning to groom her, licking across her face.

The apartment is *littered* with cat and dog toys, enrichment mats strewn everywhere. There’s a few water bowls, food bowls are set on the kitchen counter. Leashes are haphazardly thrown on the coffee table. Jason sets his duffle of gear on the floor and sighs.

“Sorry,” he says. “They’re a handful.”
