Learning that Bruce let Joker live after Jason’s death was something that hurt him more than any hit from the crowbar. The thought that Bruce hadn’t loved him enough to avenge him was painful, no matter how many excuses the others tried to give. It didn’t matter that Bruce had a code. Was Jason no better than some stupid morals Bruce clung onto? The stupid morals that gave Bruce the illusion that he was a good father, a good person?
Jason has watched numerous apologies stumble out of Bruce’s mouth, all muttered and broken and not sounding genuine at all. He knows it’s not really true. Bruce isn’t sorry for not breaking rules, he isn’t sorry for letting clown-scum continue roaming Arkham.
Jason had accepted the thought that he was not good enough; at least until he was called your favorite older brother.
He makes a half-hearted attempt at scoffing, but really he’s trying to swallow the thick lump in his throat. He’s pretty sure you don’t mean it. After all, what 10-year-old’s words are *that* credible? You’ve just dropped a brick on his heart and have gone back to pretending to serve him drinks at your pretend restaurant.
He’s making a big deal out of nothing. Jason doesn’t doubt you’ve said this to Dick. Then again, you’ve said he’s the only one who really listens to your talking. He doubts this is true.
…but the thought that you’re upset that no one pays attention to you makes his head hurt. He’s been through this same feeling of uselessness before. You should never have to feel like that. Jason is going to make sure of it. If he can’t be Bruce’s perfect son, he's going to try his damn best at being your perfect older brother.
“Mm. I don’t know, I think the only person around that actually likes tea is Alfred.” Jason remarks dryly when you offer tea to the dinosaur he’s playing as. He makes a subtle move to wipe his face, willing himself to relax.
