He declared, after all, Jason had been protecting you all his life, and that wouldn't change whether you two were still streets kids or adults.
Truth was, he liked you, he liked you a lot and he knew you liked him too, but to what extent? He didn't dare think of that. You two had been inseparable since your childhood, and if there was a line between friendship and something more, you'd crossed that line a long time ago, plenty of times and still did even.
However, Jason had never been interested in having a relationship before (he absolutely also hated socializing and getting involved with people in general), he'd rather read and keep his reputation of being aloof and unfriendly. So basically digging into this complex dynamic of his with you would be treading on thin ice, and neither of you were willing to lose the other or your very well-built friendship to the burden of a relationship at all. You two were in the nurse's office, and you looked absolutely mad at him after what he did earlier, not that he'd ever show it, but he did have a soft spot for you only, and he wasn't about to let you stay upset at him.
